November Banner: Eileen Tjan

The eleventh banner in a series of twelve released monthly throughout 2021 was designed by Eileen Tjan, and chainstitched by Jenna Blazevich.

A raffle for the banner will run from 11/23/21-11/30/21, and 100% of the money raised will be split four ways, and donated to Outlier Media, Cicero Independiente , Mission Local, & Feet in 2 Worlds.

From Eileen: “Everyone deserves to be informed and empowered to make educated decisions about what matters most to them. This is how culture gets shaped and the world changes. Yet there are many communities across the US who struggle with the bigger news outlets—whether it's inaccessibility due to language, subscription barriers, the channel the news is on is inaccessible, the news is over politicized, the news does not represent them, etc. The newsrooms we are donating to are independent, non-profit organizations who have focused missions on increasing the accessibility to local news or news by subject. I've selected three newsrooms located in cities that have had huge impacts on my life. They are cities I hope to continually invest in. The fourth, is a magazine and fellowship dedicated to immigrant voices. As part of the Asian diaspora and having seen my family go through the complexity of being immigrants, I am happy to see more resources for and by immigrants to help support their lives in America. Thank you for your interest and support!”

Outlier Media (Detroit)

Outlier Media is a Detroit-based service journalism organization. We identify, report, and deliver valuable information to empower residents to hold landlords, municipal government and elected officials accountable for longstanding problems. By keeping residents first, we hope to give more than we take, and leave people with the information they need to create change in their own communities.

Cicero Independiente (Chi)

Our mission is to provide bilingual, accurate reporting, connect residents to important resources and information, and equip our neighbors with journalism skills to engage in local democracy. We believe in bringing people of diverse media backgrounds together to co-create news that is useful and necessary. We believe in journalism that is reflective of the knowledge, resilience and organizing in a largely immigrant community, journalism that holds those in power accountable and, most importantly, that is accessible in multiple languages and formats. We envision a future where we can all participate in documenting our stories for the generations to come. A future where we can all participate equally in transformational change.

Mission Local (SF)

Mission Local, an independent, Latina-led news site based in the Mission District, the neighborhood with San Francisco’s largest Latinx population, aims to produce high-impact journalism covering government, police reform, housing, education, and community health.

Feet in 2 Worlds

MISSION Feet in 2 Worlds (Fi2W) is a journalism training organization and news outlet for immigrant voices. Our mission is to address the historic underrepresentation of immigrants and people of color in the news media. Founded in 2004, Fi2W offers paid fellowships and skill-building workshops to early and mid-career journalists interested in making stories for radio, podcasts, and online news. Our work has a significant and lasting impact on the careers of the journalists we work with and contributes to building cultural competence in mainstream media newsrooms.
